We're thrilled to have long-time MHFS member and good friend, Dale Alford, as special guest presenter.. and of his movie selection, Dale says:
"So after about 8 years of coming along and enjoying the weird and the wonderful showing every month, the good folk at Melbourne Horror Film Society have let me venture away from my usual corner seat in row 2 and present a screening.
Yayy me!! Actually, I’m pretty excited about this.
A screening in winter, in Melbourne, where the breeze we get off Bass Strait via the Antarctic chills you to the bone and where, if you stand for too long outdoors, you run the risk of blowing away, icing up, or encountering a shape shifting alien life form....
Well, maybe not the latter, but you see where I am going here...
My choice for the night is 1982s science fiction horror movie, “The Thing".
The Thing holds a bit of a special place in my heart, as it was the first horror movie my Mum took me to see at the cinema. In reality, I’m sure only because she and one of her friends wanted to see it but they both had pesky kids who weren’t quite old enough to be left unsupervised for an afternoon. But i digress….
It's bleak and desolate, and is one of those movies where anyone or everyone could be infected, which brought a sense of dread, paranoia, isolation and loneliness amongst other things along for the ride. Like our friend covid did for us not that long ago. The start of the end, the impending apocalypse. I wonder if they ran out of toilet paper too….
So rug up and come along to Outpost 31… errr… Wildflower Video Bar and enjoy what was the 42nd highest grossing movie of 1982, and one of my favoutites…"
The night will get started at 7.30pm but please come along early and partake in the new food menu at Wildflower and share in a couple of pre-drinks / get yourself a comfy seat. Memberships will be available to purchase from 7 in the cinema room - please note the new prices of $20 for three screenings or $60 for twelve. Still cash for the time being!
